Where were you in ’62?

Syston Library will be celebrating its 50th anniversary in March 2012 and is asking for your help to create a 1960s reminiscence display.

If you have any memories, pictures or newspaper clippings from Syston in the 1960s or if you would like to share a picture of yourself or a memory from wherever you were in 1962, Syston Library would love to hear from you.

Syston Library moved from Chapel Hall in Chapel Street to its current building in Upper Church Street in 1962. The library has changed a great deal in the last 50 years and in addition to the children’s and adult’s book collections it provides a DVD hire service and offers free internet and Wi-Fi access.

Exploring the River Soar Navigation

Local Historian  Brian Williams will be giving at talk at Loughborough Library on Tuesday September 6th,  6.15pm – 7.15pm  ‘Exploring the River Soar Navigation’. The talk is to support his exhibition that will be on display in the Local Studies area of the library from the 1st September.

Brian is a very interesting and fascinating speaker, and for anyone who lives near the River Soar or is thinking about going on a river trip or even just interested in exploring the local area it will be very informative. The event is free so to book your place please contact Loughborough Library

Four new Family and Local History displays at Loughborough Library

Display 1: is the ‘lost’ Athletic Grounds on Nottingham Road Loughborough. Displaying club photos and details of a number of sporting clubs that used the grounds among them Soar Valley Cricket Club and Loughborough Corinthians. Any more information about the clubs and the Athletic Grounds would be gratefully received.

Local History Open Day at Loughborough Library

Come along to Loughborough Library on Sat 16th April 10am – 4pm to find out about Loughborough’s past.

There’s lots going on during the day including talks, quizzes and a chance to explore the many local history resources the library has.

BBC reporter, crime writer and Where’s Wally at libraries

There is lots for children and adults to do at libraries in Hinckley and Bosworth this April, particularly at the recently re-opened Earl Shilton Library, where a whole week of events is being put on.

 

The BBC’s Monica Winfield will be dropping in on Earl Shilton Library for a special coffee morning talk about her work as a street pastor. This event, which starts at 10am on Tuesday 12th April, is free to attend, but it is hoped that visitors will make a donation to charity. Later that same week there will be a revealing historical event featuring old photographs, entitled ‘Old Earl Shilton: A trip down memory lane’. Local historian Jim Laws will present this free talk on bygone Earl Shilton. Booking is required for this event.

 

And from April 11th to the end of the month there will be an Easter Treaure Hunt for children at Earl Shilton Library, as well as a raffle to win a teddy bear. Simply visit the library and book out six books or more to pick up a ticket.

 

Over at Newbold Verdon Library there will be Dads Day, a free event for men and their pre-school children featuring stories and songs at 10.30am on Saturday 10th April.

 

A famous crime writer will also be visiting the library; Stephen Booth, creator of the acclaimed Ben Cooper detective novels, will be giving an evening talk at Newbold Verdon Library on Tuesday 12th April at 7pm, followed by a book signing. Tickets cost £2.50, to book or for more details call 0116 3053661.

 

And especially for children over the Easter holidays, there’s the chance to dress up as famous literary character Wally for “There’s Wally” at some Hinckley & Bosworth area libraries.

 

These fun-packed sessions based around the adventures of the famous bespectacled traveller are all free and take place at the following times:

Heroes of history come to Blaby’s libraries

Leicestershire’s heroes of the past and a classic heroine from literature will be the focus of events at  libraries in the Blaby area in March.

 

Local author David Bell will be giving an insight into the brave and the bold from the county in a talk entitled Leicestershire Heroes at Enderby Library on Wednesday 23rd March at 7pm.

 

His subjects will include Spitfire pilot Johnnie Johnson, suffragette Annie Hawkins and secret agent Eliane Plewman.

 

And at Cosby Library, literary expert Helen Peden will be taking a closer look at Charlotte Bronte’s heroic protaganist Jane Eyre, and at the daring ideas found in the pages of this classic novel.

 

This entertaining talk takes place on Monday 28th March, at 7pm.

 

Both the talks cost £2 including refreshments.

 





Novelists and history experts visit Oadby and Wigston Libraries

There’s lots to see and learn about at events in  libraries in Oadby & Wigston this month.

 

War veterans can bring their photos, films, badges and Royal British Legion memorabilia to Oadby Library and Wigston Magna Library to discuss the fascinating stories behind these objects with a historian.

 

These free workshops, which take place between 10am and 1pm on Wednesday 9th March (Oadby) and between 3pm and 6pm on Tuesday 22nd March (Wigston), are part of a landmark project, led by Leicestershire County Council, designed to mark the 90th anniversary of the Legion.

Community Archaeologist Peter Liddle will give a discussion on the Hallaton Treasure at 1pm at Wigston Magna Library on Thursday 10th March tickets £2 each including light refreshments.

 

Also in March, Leicestershire Libraries will be hosting a series of talks by published authors called Words On The Street.

 

Glyn Iliffe, Leicestershire author of the Adventures of Odysseus books set in the quasi-historical world of Greek mythology, will be appearing at Wigston Library on Thursday 17 March at 7pm. Tickets cost £2.

 

Sophie Hannah, author of six unsettling psychological dramas (one of which, The Point Of Rescue, will be televised on ITV1 later in the year), will be giving her talk at Oadby Library on Friday 25th March at 7pm, followed by a book signing. Tickets cost £3.

 

And as part of Oadby Neighbourhood Action Week there will be a free health & wellbeing morning on Tuesday 8th March between 10am and 1pm – health checks, gentle exercise, walking, advice, massage and fairtrade refreshments.
