Create war verses at poetry sessions

Writers keen to follow in the footsteps of Wilfred Owen can hone their own war-themed verses at special creative writing workshops.

Led by famous local poet Deborah Tyler-Bennett, the free events coincide with National Poetry Day and encourage participants to write their own poems based on objects and images.

Juggle with words at circus-themed writing workshops

Children aged between 4 and 12 years-old can drop in for free to juggle with words, explore the stars of the circus and clown about with language at events in Wigston, Hinckley and Loughborough next week, all of which are free.

Poet and storyteller Lindsey Warnes Carroll will encourage children to write their own verses based on recipes, shapes and Japanese haiku, at the Record Office in Wigston on Wednesday 17th August between 10am and 12noon and between 2pm and 4pm. For more information call 0116 2571080.

On the same day at Loughborough Library, writer Alison Mott will be guiding young minds through the world of words via the fun of the Big Top between 2pm and 4pm. For more information call 0116 3052420.

Husband and wife poet team Sue Mackrell and David McCormack will also be running a creative writing workshop in Hinckley Library on Thursday the 18th of August between 10am and 12:30pm and between 2pm and 4pm. For more information call 0116 305 3624.





Coalville Library Limerick Competition Winners Announced

Coalville Library received over 30 excellent entries which were of a very high standard.  Staff had a hilarious time judging the limericks, creating a lot of fun and laughter in the library!  The public are invited to view the winning entries and those highly commended on display at Coalville Library until the end of November.

Half-term poetry fun at new Barwell Library

Children are being invited to Barwell Library in Leicestershire to join in with some half-term fun. 

 

 

The library is hosting a FREE special poetry and activity event.  The ‘Gavin Grass Head Poetry’ event which is aimed at 5-11 year olds is taking place on Monday 18th October between 2.30pm – 4pm.  Children can come along and make their very own grass head character and have a go at writing some poetry too!

There was a young lady from Coalville…

Budding poets with a sense of humour can enter a limerick competition at Coalville Library as part of National Poetry Day, with different prizes for adults and children.

A limerick is a funny poem with a good rhythm and a great punch line. An individual or group may enter as many limericks as they like, but a different limerick must be written for each entry.

The competition is free to enter, open to everyone and will run from Friday 8th October 2010, through half term until Friday 22nd October 2010.

Prizes will be three free hires of DVDs for the best entry from those over 16 years and a £10 Amazon voucher for the best entry from children aged 16 and under.

How do I love thee? Count the ways at Blaby Library.

The lyrical yearnings of poets from Shakespeare and Marlowe right up until modern writers like Carol Ann Duffy will be explored by popular speaker Helen Peden as she unravels the world of love poetry in a live talk.
In this entertaining and light-hearted look at love poetry, both from established literary canon and more modern works, Helen will show how love is not always portrayed as we might expect.

Relish ridiculous rhymes at local libraries

Fun-filled children’s events bursting with limericks, tongue-twisters and funny poetry are being held at local libraries.
Libraries in Earl Shilton and Newbold Verdon are running the after-school activities to celebrate National Poetry Day in October 2009.

At the sessions, which are free and open to youngsters aged between, five and nine year olds, children can play games, take part in craft activities and listen to funny poems.

Ridiculous Rhymes is being held at Newbold Verdon Library from 3.45pm to 4.45pm on Wednesday, 7th October and at Earl Shilton Library, the event is running from 3.45pm to 4.45pm on Thursday, 8th October.

Great news for members of reading groups and writing groups!

Leicestershire Libraries and Loughborough University have agreed a reduced price for all reading group and writing group members for next weekend’s Polyverse Poetry Festival.  The festival starts on Friday July 24th and ends on Sunday July 26th.

It’s a massive event, featuring over 40 poets, workshops and discussions…. and Poet Laureate Carol Ann Duffy!

In recognition of the great support that the library service has given to the festival, prices have been reduced for reading group and writing group members: from £20 to £15 for the whole weekend, and from £10 to £7 for Saturday evening. 

Saturday will feature “Dreams of May”, a critically-acclaimed play-in-poetry, four of the best young writers from Leicestershire, plus Carol Ann Duffy.
